In order to receive a “By-law #W-100 Compliant” sticker, a business or commercial kitchen must:
Be located in the CBRM.
For commercial kitchens, have a grease interceptor ("grease or oil trap") properly installed on sinks to remove fats, oils or grease (FOG) from entering the wastewater collection system.
For service stations, have an oil/water separator properly installed on sinks or floor drains to remove oil or grease from entering the wastewater collection system.
Inspect and maintain grease interceptors on a regular basis.
Keep an Oil Interceptor Maintenance Log for each interceptor installed.

CBRM Wastewater By-law #W-100 was adopted in 2009 to help protect waterways, ecosystems, public health, and municipal infrastructure. It defines limits for contaminants such as oil, grit, solvents, and metals that can be released into the CBRM wastewater collection system.
All businesses that are connected to the municipal wastewater collection system are required to meet compliance standards set out in By-law #W-100. Whether it's cooking oil used in food establishments or motor oil used in service stations, businesses that use oil require an interceptor to prevent the discharge of oil into the wastewater collection system.
